In a few less fortunate cases, an au pair and host family enter into rematch. This occurs once the au pair is on the ground and has spent some time with the host family but the match is not working out for a certain reason. It is recommended for the au pair and host family to try and resolve their differences through open conversation and problem-solving supported by the sponsoring agency, but if no solution is found then both parties go into rematch.
When a rematch happens, the au pair has a certain amount of time to match with another family before her visa and residence permit may be revoked. The sponsoring agency will guide them through this process, but if no match is found they may need to return to their home country.
Rematches often happen when there is a mismatch between the host family and au pair regarding expectations and responsibilities. This is why the initial interview and matching process is so crucial because, with the right questions, you can see if both parties are in alignment with their hopes for the program.
In more drastic instances, issues such as fear of safety or invasion of privacy from either party can be grounds for an immediate rematch. During this time, the host family must ensure the au pair continues to have room and board for 2 weeks while a solution and final decision is made.
If an agency is involved, they will mediate and help find a new au pair and new host family if both sides still want to continue with the cultural exchange program.
Cultural differences, abuse of the rules and regulations of the program, working longer hours than in the au pair contract, communication and discipline styles, and personality differences can all contribute to the possibility of a rematch. As soon as the au pair arrives for the beginning of the program, the host family and au pair should try to build an open and honest relationship where trust is the foundation. Without this, miscommunication arises which can be difficult to come back from.

With the help of an agency, a rematch between a host and au pair can be a “friendly” rematch where both parties can continue with the program. It is the job of the agency to listen to the issues and communicate with everyone to find a possible solution. The agency must strictly follow all rules and regulations for the program as well as the signed contract.
The agency must assess any wrongdoing from either side and use its judgment to determine whether the host family and au pair can be placed in a new situation following the program. If they discern that either party is indeed not fit, they can choose to terminate their participation in the program.
